Unlimited Potential

“Excellence is the unlimited ability to improve the quality of what you have to offer.”             ~Rick Pitino

I love this quote.  It says so much about how we can improve ourselves and lays responsibility for improvement squarely at our own feet.  I felt compelled to find out more about this wise man, Rick Pitino.  I was not surprised to find that he is a basketball coach and rather successful coach at that.

A man who is responsible for an entire team of young men struggling to excel at their given sport is quite a challenge.  As a teacher myself, I understand the challenges that come from trying to inspire those who are seeking to live and perform at the very edge of their potential.  I dare say that we all strive to look back at our lives and feel that we have lived as fully as we possible could have.

My martial arts teacher, Mr. Wallen, was fond of quoting another great football coach, Vince Lombardi, who said, “Practice does not make perfect.  Only perfect practice makes perfect.”  Wow.  Talk about inspiring others to live at the edge of their potential.

We all have the capacity and unlimited ability to improve our offering.  Let us all ask ourselves this week, “What am I offering and how can I improve that offering?”  Perhaps just realizing that we are offering every day, whether we realize it or not – in words, in deeds and in spirit – will  be enough to help us improve the quality of our offering and thereby, improve the quality of our lives and those around us.

  1. Susie, I love this idea of using our excellence as an offering. Ultimately, isn’t this what it’s all about — finding our purpose (then cultivating it with excellence) and sharing it? Great quote + post!

    1. I totally love the quote too. I feel like it is almost a life motto and just love the way it takes the whole “drive ourselves and others to excellence [ie crazy!]” and makes it about the how well we offer. So poignant – especially at this time of year :) I really enjoy your comments and checking in…I feel like I’m getting to know you even though we’ve never met :) Thank you and enjoy Thanksgiving!
