Qualities of Yoga Teachers – Thirty Day Personal Challenge: Day 19

“Talent without discipline is like an octopus on roller skates. There’s plenty of movement, but you never know if it’s going to be forward, backwards, or sideways.”  — H. Jackson Brown, Jr, .Author

Quality 19:  Disciplined

Good yoga teachers are disciplined.  Only through self-discipline can they move into the ranks of “good” yoga teacher.  A yoga teacher sets the example for their students to follow.  Being the leader requires follow-through of their own teachings.  As yogis take to their mats with focused attention upon their teachers, much of the sacred feeling of the practice comes from the responsibility the yogi teacher carries and fulfills.

Being disciplined in mind, body and spirit requires regular practice of emotional intelligence, physical practice and spiritual connection.  Good yoga teachers excel in their practice and help to bring that excellence to their students.  Being a great practitioner of asana is not always necessary for a good yoga teacher, but being a devoted and disciplined student of yoga is required.

Good yoga teachers bring forth out of the abundance of their hearts and as such, they must consistently fill their hearts with goodness, truth, honesty, and integrity.  To keep their hearts and intentions pure and focused requires a large dose of daily discipline.

How do you relate to discipline?  Have you befriended it as the helper it is – able to get you from point A to point B?  Learning to embrace self-discipline changes lives.  Have you ever met a teacher who has introduced you to self-discipline in a positive way?
