Day 11 – Qualities of a Yoga Teacher – Thirty Day Personal Challenge

“I feel it’s a responsibility for anyone who breaks through a certain ceiling… to send the elevator back down and give others a helpful lift.” ~Kevin Spacey

Quality #11:  Helpful

Being helpful requires that yoga teachers actually teach their students in a way that they can understand.  Good yoga teachers reach deep into their students minds and help them to learn more about themselves in every class.

“Sending the elevator back down” means that good yoga teachers have first paved the way for their students, and through teaching, actually bring their students closely behind on the cleared path.  Helpfully, yoga teachers clear the path of unnecessary and dangerous stumbling blocks that may sidetrack or injure their students.  By leading the way and using their teaching skills, they bring as many students as possible to new and exciting levels of skill.

Good yoga teachers realize that teaching requires a high degree of resolve to first find the path of yoga for themselves and then translate their path into learnable lessons for their students.  Being helpful by anticipating their students’ needs, they are truly examples of servant-leaders.

Would you agree that being helpful is a way that we serve others?  How do you define “helpful?”
