Getting Ready for the Big Race!


I just came back from a ten mile run this morning and am feeling pretty fatigued.  I decided to go without my trusty Garmin because it needed to be charged, and I needed to unwind from the technology.  As I pounded out the miles without it strapped to my wrist, I felt free to focus only on my mileage and breaks at regular intervals to walk.  

Sometimes I feel as if my Garmin is more an enemy than friend because  at every moment, I can look at my watch and immediately judge myself for how hard or easy I am working.  When I strap that GPS on my arm, I no longer run based on how my body feels; instead I run based on the numbers on my watch.  It is a double-edged sword for sure!

I am behind on my schedule for this race and have not really put in the mileage that I should have.  I decided to increase my mileage today so that hopefully I will be better prepared for race day.  This will be my eighth half marathon, and they are still challenging but extremely fun!  

I love the post-race party and hanging out with friends.  I also love the feel of my tired body as I reflect on my performance and mentally pat myself on the back for completing it.  Racing – even at my low level – is indeed something to be savored and enjoyed.
